Figuring Out Shipping
Permalink Closed

Is there an easy way to figure out shipping? I haven't shipped anything lately and the last time I went to the post office I ended up paying more than I thought I would have to. And what about packaging? I buy a box to ship the item in. So... on average how much does that cost? Or is there a better way?

Okay, you can tell I don't know ANYTHING about shipping. So... how do I do it and figure out my cost so I can be fair when shipping something?

If you know the weight of the item and know the person's zip - you can look it up on USPS.com.  Or you can just guestimate. Jeans are heavy and will cost more than you think!!!

Don't buy your boxes.I have sold on ebay several times and never bought my shipping boxes.I go to the stores and rescue boxes that are just being thrown out and use them.Cuts down on the cost.Go to your dollar stores and buy your packaging tape for a dollar. That also saves money. If you buy newspapers-use that as packing material and just wrap the clothes up in Walmart bags to keep the ink off of them.
If you have a scale at home, weigh yourself then hold the full and packed box in your arms and weigh al together. That should get you close to how much your package weighs.I would add on probably another 3 pounds to it and then you can go onto usps.com website and that should tell you what the shipping is going to cost.

You can also go to the Post Office and get free Priority Flat Rate boxes.  These boxes are the same postage rate no matter what they weigh.

If you're going to buy packaging you should look into polymailers instead of boxes. They are lightweight but sturdy envelopes. They are inexpensive and keep the shipping cost down too since they weigh less than a box.

Here's another tip- www.USPS.com is your friend.

You can get free priority mail stuff delivered to your door. This is not just the flat rate boxes, but the envelopes, other sizes of boxes and more.

A cool thing about the site is that as long as just ONE of your items is priority mail or overnight (or there is one other, I forget) - they will come pick up ALL your packages for free.

Like, yesterday I sent out 11 packages, and only 3 were priority mail- the others were first class ground. And my postman came and got it all for me.

One other tip- it's actually CHEAPER to print and ship stuff using the online site (or paypal) than going to the post office - or even using the self service machine at the post office.

And sometimes it's cheaper to mail stuff priority if you are sending several things than it is to ship ground. You can stuff a LOT of stuff in a flat rate box too.

Just some tips I've picked up.

Haha. I am afraid to post it until I get shipping figured out.

I have a cow costume new with no tags, a halloween jack-o-lantern sweater and sweat pants seat, and a few onesies. Super cute. Worn with my first son, but my second is too big.

I'll be posting soon. :)
